Distinguished Speaker Series 2015 : The Reform of Copyright - A discussion of international trends by Professor Daniel Gervais (12 February 2015)
The Distinguished Speaker Series is IP Academy’s continuous effort to bring world renowned thought leaders to share their views, insights and best practices in the rapidly evolving fields of IP and the innovation economy. For 2015, IP Academy is embarking on a series of talks on Copyright reform as part of its Thought Leadership programme.
At this Distinguished Speaker Series session, Professor Daniel Gervais, who is Professor of Law at Vanderbilt University Law School and Director of the Vanderbilt Intellectual Property Program, spoke on “Structured Copyright reform”. He revealed to the audience a new framework he was working on called the “four quadrants of authorship” for the purposes of discussing how to create, reuse, monetize copyright in the new digital era and the current inequality of income between authors and intermediaries. He also shared interesting anecdotes on the US music industry with the audience. His provocative lecture led to an interesting exchange of questions and ideas between Professor Gervais and the audience during the Question and Answer segment.
