WIPO-Singapore Summer School (18-29 May 2015)

The WIPO Singapore Summer School on Intellectual Property (IP) successfully concluded in May 2015.

This is the third time WIPO Academy and the IP Academy have partnered on the WIPO Singapore Summer School series and the successful conclusion exemplified another successful collaboration between WIPO Academy and us. Held over two weeks at the IP Academy where 17 students and young professionals from 5 different countries converged in Singapore for two weeks of intensive learning, sharing and networking,  the participants were given an opportunity to learn and to gain an appreciation of IP as a tool for economic, social, cultural and technological development, as well as to understand the role WIPO plays in the global administration of IP.

The diversity and background of the students and lecturers make the Summer Schools a truly international forum for discussion and exchange of ideas with a focus on IP.

Here are some of the feedbacks we gathered from the participants:
Mr Rajesh Krishnan, Senior Manager, INDIA
"A great way to bring minds from various countries to learn, share and grow mutually....Every single aspect was taken care of by the organizations. Be it food, be it excursion tours or the facilities provided. Big thanks to all, especially Felix and Tony; for making this a memorable experience in terms of learning, fun and everything else; including networking."

Ms Madhura Kar, Student, INDIA
" The WIPO-Singapore Summer School was one of my best experiences so far. Being a Master student in Pharmaceutical Sciences, I knew very little about IP, but wanted to gain a basic understanding about IP and facilitate a smooth transition from pharmacy to Patents. Therefore I decided to participate in this summer school....I would strongly recommend this Summer School to any students/professionals who wants to gain a comprehensive perspective and knowledge on IP."

Mr Ebrahim Alabboudi, Patent Examiner, Gulf Countries Council (GCC) Patent Office, Riyadh
"It was wonderful opportunity to join WIPO Singapore Summer School. The course covered all major aspects of IP such as Patents, Trademarks, Copyrights, etc. Also the variety of participants was such useful and encouraged good discussions regarding IP hot topics....The most important thing I learned from this course is the integration of IP and life issues and general view for IP is affecting our life and how IP can provide solutions for global problems.

Ms Vanessa Ricci, Project Advisor, Belgium
The WIPO Singapore Summer School was a unique opportunity to learn more about the IP regime in South East Asia. The teachers were providing comparisons between the EU,US and ASEAN IP legal framework. The school was attentive to the needs of the participants by providing practical case studies but also by giving local highlights including a Durian cake!

Distinguished Speaker Series 2015 : The Reform of Copyright - A discussion of international trends by Professor Daniel Gervais (12 February 2015)

IP Academy held their 2nd Distinguished Speaker Series on 12th February 2015 which was attended by 40 participants from the who’s who of the IP fraternity including heads of IP of law firms, CTOs, and senior public service officers.

The Distinguished Speaker Series is IP Academy’s continuous effort to bring world renowned thought leaders to share their views, insights and best practices in the rapidly evolving fields of IP and the innovation economy. For 2015, IP Academy is embarking on a series of talks on Copyright reform as part of its Thought Leadership programme.

At this Distinguished Speaker Series session, Professor Daniel Gervais, who is Professor of Law at Vanderbilt University Law School and Director of the Vanderbilt Intellectual Property Program, spoke on “Structured Copyright reform”. He revealed to the audience a new framework he was working on called the “four quadrants of authorship” for the purposes of discussing how to create, reuse, monetize copyright in the new digital era and the current inequality of income between authors and intermediaries. He also shared interesting anecdotes on the US music industry with the audience. His provocative lecture led to an interesting exchange of questions and ideas between Professor Gervais and the audience during the Question and Answer segment.
